VNA HealthCare Selects Allscripts Homecare

Chicago, IL - Allscripts announced recently that VNA HealthCare, part of Hartford Healthcare Corporation (HHCC), selected Allscripts Homecare as its electronic home care system. VNA HealthCare, which provides home health care, hospice and independent living services to 60 communities in the Greater Hartford and Greater Waterbury areas, will use Allscripts Homecare to improve clinical documentation while at the same time reducing paper and filing.

A trusted and highly regarded home health agency since 1901, VNA HealthCare provides home health care to more than 30,000 residents of central Connecticut each year. The agency helps people live independently in their own homes by offering a full spectrum of home health care ranging from skilled nursing, hospice, rehabilitation and speech therapy to cardiac nursing. VNA HealthCare has facilities in Cheshire, Glastonbury, Hartford, Southbury, Waterbury and Windsor Locks, Conn., from which its staff of 700 delivers services for patients in the surrounding towns.

VNA HealthCare's use of Allscripts expands HHCC's investment in the company's solutions. HHCC-owned Hartford Hospital, an 867-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Connecticut Medical School, and Midstate Medical Center in Meriden, Conn. both utilize Allscripts ED emergency department information system. Last year HHCC began deploying Allscripts Enterprise(R) Electronic Health Record (EHR) for 200 physicians in its owned and affiliated medical groups.

"Home Care organizations are facing increasingly complex challenges," said Ellen Rothberg, Chief Executive Officer of VNA HealthCare. "To meet these challenges, we need to automate our business with a home care software system that can quickly and easily perform everyday administrative and clinical tasks while rapidly scaling up to meet growing demand or handle new lines of business. Allscripts Homecare delivers."

Allscripts Homecare is designed to improve clinical quality of care, financial performance, and operational control for large, integrated home care organizations and small home care companies. Business, clinical, and scheduling functionality for multiple lines of business--home health, hospice, and private duty are combined seamlessly in one integrated home care software system.

"Hartford Healthcare and VNA HealthCare have shown they are national leaders in the electronic healthcare movement by connecting their caregivers to the latest information in virtually all of their care settings, from the hospital to physician offices to their patients' homes," said Glen Tullman, Chief Executive Officer of Allscripts. "VNA HealthCare's selection of Allscripts Homecare also confirms the value of our ongoing partnership with Hartford Healthcare."

VNA HealthCare also will implement Allscripts Referral Management, a system that allows home health, hospice, and private duty agencies to track all patient referrals in a single system. Agencies automatically receive and respond to referrals from hospitals, enter referrals from non-electronic sources, and collect important marketing information. Referrals can be accepted within minutes instead of days or hours and receiving referrals automatically eliminates missed or delayed referrals. Allscripts Referral Management also automatically transfers hospital referral information into Allscripts Homecare, saving hours of data entry time each day and ensuring the accuracy of critical patient information.

"Allscripts is incredibly easy to learn and use with workflow built into it, so there's the potential for a lot of efficiencies," said Culos. "Essentially, we think of it as an electronic health record for home care, which we need in order to decrease paper and filing, and enhance the quality and continuity of care we deliver."
