Masks and Cannulea
You may take oxygen using a mask. They are useful for higher flows or if you have a cold, but they make it difficult to talk or to eat when taking oxygen. The Cannulae are, in many instances, just as effective as using a mask, but are more comfortable.
Cannulae are very convenient to use, and are as effective as masks. They enable you to take oxygen through your nose and allow you to eat, talk or drink at the same time. They can however, irritate the nose of some users. In this case, a non-petroleum gel such as KY Gel, available from pharmacists, can be used. It is not Advisable to use creams or petroleum based gels such as Vaseline. If there you have any doubt or reservations, consult your service provider, pharmacist or doctor.
Supplementary oxygen is usually very dry. Though it is mixed with the room air before you breath it, you may find your nose becomes dry and sore.
Your doctor may recommend a humidifier which will be supplied and fitted by Air Products Oxygen Therapy Division.
